We were held captive for 18 years by our children’s cat Samson.
Watching Sam was a study in keeping warm. First off, like most cats, he loved the sunny spots on the floor; He was always annoyed when the sunny spot moved while he was sleeping in it!
Next, he moved on to the floor registers. Sometimes we would wonder why it was cold in a room only to go looking and find Sam flattened out on the register! Oh, he was warm all right, but there was no warm air for the rest of us humans.
His next trick was to cuddle up with our daughter who always had an electric blanket
Sure enough, there Sam under the covers with a rather smug look on his face. I turned the blanket off.
When our daughter got home, I questioned her about having turned it off. She was positive she had shut it off so we tried an experiment the next few days.
She would leave the control flat on her pillow in the off setting. Sure enough, a few hours later the control would be on and Sam would be under the blanket.
We finally caught him walking across the control on the push button switch - click – blanket on – happy cat.
Not liking to have appliances running while we were away, we ended up having to hang the control over her headboard while she was not there.
After our daughter left home, the “old folks” inherited the old cat. After a couple of years, he took to sharing our bed on cold winter nights. He would burrow under our blankets to the foot of the bed and curl up by my feet. Nice foot warmer, except I was not allowed to move my feet even one inch or he would gently tap me with a claw!
If he got too hot while he was under the covers he would come out panting and lay on top until he cooled off then back under he would go again.
Well the old boy is gone now and I miss that warm furry foot warmer on cold nights, but memories of Sam still bring warm thoughts.
Lessons learned:
- Solar heating is wonderful everyone should use it.
- Keep your registers clear to share the warm air.
- Electric blankets are wonderful, especially in a cold house.
- To keep warm use an electric blanket and share your bed.
- Pets make good memories to keep your heart warm.
