My wife and I still have the Star from the top of our first Christmas tree. You know how it is with newlyweds no money to spend on fancy stuff. I was rushing to finish college on the GI Bill and my wife was putting food on our table by working at K-Mart.
Some how we got a miniature pine tree to set up on top of a table in our small apartment. We had a few homemade ornaments but nothing for the top of the tree. We cut a star shape out of cardboard from a box and taped it to a cardboard tube from the bathroom trashcan. This whole piece of art was covered with tin foil, shiny side out. All this before recycling was popular.
I like stars. They are the energy source of the universe. They push out light and heat. The pull the heavenly bodies into position by their gravity. They shine and light our way.
As a navigator, I’ve learned some of their names. I’ve learned how they are used to locate and guide us on our way.
Our star, the sun, lights our days and sends us energy. It pulls the tides. It powers the wind and waves. It makes green things grow and warms us in its light. I like calling solar power “Star Power”.
That first Christmas star of ours was replaced by an angel my wife made from a kit. That angel has flown atop our Christmas tree every year for 35 years.
But, we still have that first Star.
We wish you joy and happiness this Holiday Season and May the Star of Christmas shine in your life
