You can make a big reduction in your heating and air conditioning bills by stopping the unplanned movement of air in or out of your home.
At home, a good way to find drafts that need to be sealed is to turn your air conditioner or furnace off and close all windows and doors. Then turn on your kitchen and bathroom vent fans. Turn on the clothes dryer. They all push air out of the house.
Next go around inside the house and check for a draft of air coming in around doors and windows. Check any electric outlets located on outside walls too. Some folks use the smoke from a lighted incense stick to revel the drafts. Some folks have use smoke from a cigarette for this. A candle flame will work too. Please be extra careful with fire.
In industrial or commercial environments, soap solutions that bubble up are used to find small air leaks. Shaving cream from an aerosol can works well for finding vacuum leaks. It is sucked in where there is a vacuum leak.
The money that you save by stopping the unwanted flow of air may be your own.
